How to Hire a Heating and Cooling Contractor

We all know the last thing we want to do on the hottest day of the year is turn on our cooling system and hear nothing, but more often than not- that is exactly what happens. The saying goes, “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.” Don’t worry though, we are going to cover what you should do if your system does go out and you need a contractor stat.

Ask For Recommendations

When the sun is beating down on the house and your kids are getting cranky, you need to find a contractor and find one fast. You don’t necessarily have the luxury of being able to spend days and days researched and comparing to find the best contractor at the best price, you need to find a good contractor that can do the work asap. So, ask for recommendations from friends and family and local social media groups you are in. The best information you can get is from someone who has “been there and done that”. Asking for the good, bad and ugly can get you a quick list of those to contact and those you should stay away from.

Check Reviews

Now that you have a working list from your family and neighbors, start checking their online reviews. Places like Yelp and Facebook are great platforms where you can discover a little bit more about your potential contractor. Check with the Better Business Bureau and see if they have any outstanding complaints from past customers. Knowing who you are hiring before they enter your home will save you a lot of time and trouble in the long run.

Call For Availability

Odds are, if it’s the hottest day of the year and your system is on the fritz- so are others. Make sure to get a long enough list of good contractors that you can call and check their availability. If you talk to one and they can’t get to you for a week, move on to the next company and see when they can get out. Put together a list of dates and times and make sure to choose not only the best company for the job, but also a company that can get there fast. Nothing is worse than being stranded in a hot house that will only get hotter.

Ask For Estimates

If it comes down to you needing a new system or roasting in your home- you are going to want to get a few estimates. Getting a couple of estimates to compare against each other will give you the best decision moving forward and you’ll be able to find out who is the best fit for your cooling system replacement.

No one likes to be stuck without a cool home, but know that making and educated decision before you hire a contractor can save you both time and money in the long run.
